I would like to share my internet connection which is limited to a single IP addess... I currently have an 8port switch with cat5e cables wired to 6 PCs. Now I would rather spend my money on wireless Router and eventually upgrade the cards to wireless when I get the money. Until then, I would like to send the data through my 8port switch to be shared. Is this possible?

Yes , it is possible . I had my SMC 7004VWBR as gateway, DHCP . Since I need more wire ports, I just plug my Netgear ( 10/100 ) switch right into one of my SMC LAN ports . Work fine with my straight RJ45 patch cord and all my LAN is happy in one subnet .

You might need a crossover cord depends on what port ( uplink/reg) you want to plug from & to .

I've never really looked at wireless routers. I have seen that they tend to say '4 port' on them and assumed it meant 4 wireless PCs could connect at once. I never understood why a wireless router would be limited in such a way, though. Does that mean that when it says '4 ports' it means 4 physical ports as with standard routers? I suppose I should and will do my own dirty work on that. Time to read up on wireless gear. Thanks

The latter interpretation is correct. It has a 4 port switch built in. So, you could connect 4 devices via cable and other machines wirelessly.
