using Dlink 614+. If connecting via wireless, then Windows Update works. If connected via ethernet, to same router, Windows update freezes at 0%. (connecting directly to DSL Westell modem, it works)

Also, cannot do hardly anything on the EBAY site thru ethernet (wireless is fine)

Did you try disabling the wifi NIC first? You could very well be confusing Windows as to what the default route might be.

I don't have the wireless NIC in that computer anymore. I just put it in for a test, because I knew that the other computers in my house could all do it with no problem, and they all connected wireless.

never had a problem with that (with a wireless nic, and a ethernet port on a laptop)

maybe a cable going bad? with the wireless nic out does the wired connection still act up?

yes, have been using the ethernet connection exclusively on that computer. (just put the wireless nic in only for a test to rule out Win XP. I will try another cable.
