Current Situation: I have a DSL Cable Modem (earthlink.net), a desktop PC connected directly to the modem (running Windows Me) and two standalone printers.

Required Setup: My son has a desktop (running Windows 98SE) directly over the room with the modem. I would like to set up a wireless network to a. Share the Internet between the two current PCs (may add others in the future) and b. Share both printers.

Conclusion- It appears that I have to buy a wireless router (802.11g), a desktop wireless card (also 802.11g) and a separate print server (also 802.11g)-both parallel and USB 1.1 and 2.0.

Question: In your opinon, what is the best company to buy all three from (reliability is key since I want to avoid any compatibility problems). I know the standard is supposed to ensure compatibility but I am wary. Any idea on a price range and compelxiity in setting up?

Your plan will work, and it is going to be costing.

Make sure that Linksys has USB Wireless Printer server, it is not a common item that every one make.

If the computers are always ON you probably better off sharing the printers through the regular ports.

You should consider USB Wireless for the Desktop.

Why?

Wireless is depending on signal propagation.

PCI Wireless Client Card ends up been stuck behind the computer's case, resultant in obstructed transmission and poor performance. USB is connected to the Port with 2-3' cable allowing the Antenna to be placed above the System for better Transmission.

However a PCI card is a good choice when a powerful external Antenna is needed for long distance. Many Wireless PCI cards come with a removable Antenna.
