wireless recommendations?

unfortunately, i can't really do much else. I'm stuck with a computer in another room inside of a tiny apartment. I used to be connected directly to my router, but now that I use wireless, the performance hit is tremendous. I get 3 to 4 bars, and at 4 bars the connection strength is 67%. This obviously leads to a poor gaming experience. I've tried to alleviate that by moving the router closer by placing it on kitchen bar. This leaves about 8ft before it hits the wall where my router is. It boosts it just a bit.

Current Equipment:
Linksys wireless router - model wrh54g
D-link usb adapter -model WUA-1340

I was thinking about replacing the adapter or adding a signal booster - even considered running a 100ft Ethernet cable along the ceiling into the room. lol I don't know the correct course of action so, I'm posting here in hopes of getting some help.

Try changing the wireless channel your router is using. You may be conflicting with other AP's in your apartment.

you could go rogue and run channel 13 🙂 but that might be illegal in your country

lol, if we could get to it by normal, accessible router settings I'm assuming it woudn't be illegal?

anyhoo so I went out and bought a 50ft ethernet cable and have it tucked away behind most of the furniture. It was actually extremely cheap at 9.99 and will do until I can upgrade the gear.

BTW just for grins and giggles, I tested the router / adapter on my girlfriend's computer in the living room. She was getting only 79% strength in the same room. We actually had to move the router about 3 feet away from her computer to get full strength. So, in this example is the router or the adapter more likely to be the culprit? I definitely will be replacing something here.
