Wireless Range Issue

Ok so here's the deal - I have friend who I am trying to help with their wireless issues and here's the problem:

They have verizon fios which gives you a router/modem combination and apparently they don't have any with stronger antennas.
they also have a nas storage unit which is connected to this network.

The problem is, downstairs the signal isn't strong enough and they want to be able to access the NAS which is all on a certain subnet.

they got a wireless range extender, but that doesn't seem to work too well either. the downstairs laptop only connects in a certain area, and then the problem is that it is on a different subnet, so you can't see the NAS drive.

what are my options here?

thanks!

First thing I would do is open up netstumbler and check to see what other AP's in your area are using for a channel. You need to pick the least congested one, and even though there are many to choose from, only 1/6/11 are actually separate. All others overlap with another freq. Once that is done retry the range extender. You should be able to set up the range extender as just a repeater so it gets dhcp from the main AP.

Thank you that is a good idea. i haven't checked yet but hopefully the verizon router they provided has options to change the channel.

Also, which brand range extender would you recommend? i think they have a generic one now.

my idea was to plug in a 2nd wireless router and move it closer to the area that needs coverage.
