ok, heres the situation.
I'm moving into a new apartment next to a friend who already has a cable modem. I'd like to share his internet connection and both of us having been looking for an excuse to get wireless NICs for our laptops. so... I'm trying to figure out the most cost effective way of getting this done.
We would also prefer to have an access point near one of my bedrooms which is in direct line of sight of one of the pools and only obstructed by the sheet of glass in the window.
He has:
2 desktops
1 laptop
1 linksys 4port switch/gateway
I have:
1 desktop
1 laptop
( and maybe 1 more desktop in the near future)
1 dlink 4port switch/gateway
Now, I was thinking we could add a access point off of his switch and another access point off the wan port of my gateway. That alone should connect our to little networks together right? I've never played with wireless stuff and I need to know if I would have any problems using the access point off the wan port of my router as a dhcp client of the other access point.
Then we could each get a wireless nic for our laptops and both would connect off of his access point.
Or maybe I could sell my switch/gateway and buy one with an AP built in, of course maybe he could too. Or we could get only one on his side and I could just buy two wireless nics (one for my laptop and one for my desktop) plus one for his laptop.
Now, I would prefer to just run a cable between our two switches and add a single access point in my apartment, but the apartment complex is VERY strict about drilling holes and stuff, plus the floor plans wouldnt be condusive to this.
ALSO, the pool is about 150m from my window of my second bedroom and about 20m farther from his cable modem connection but from there would go through alot of concrete, walls, and a few trees.
ok, I also need recommendations on brands for the wireless stuff and I also would like to know if anyone has used SMC's 802.11a 72Mbps wireless stuff (seems pretty damn fast for wireless)
Thanx
