Question is, any bad eggs in the DLink, LinkSys, Netgear family? I need a wireless card for a 64bit vista desktop computer.
Is it worth it to get an N even if the wireless router I have is an older Netgear 54G? Future proof and all?
I use it for gaming mostly, and as much as I don't want to use wireless, its kind of a necessity.
I do use some torrents, but mostly on another computer when I do, not this one.

Comp info: Vista 64bit, 4gb ram, e7200, x4850
ISP: AT&T DSL 5mb
Router Info: 4ish year old Netgear 54g

On a side note, I do have a Netgear powerline adapter kind like this:
Powerline Adapter with a rj45 connection on one, and a broadcasting wireless thingy on the other with no RJ45 connection. Could I get this to work as a access point till I order a card?

Thanks for your opinions

as for the N question, "future proofing" with N is worthless. Theres no standard yet, its just a draft, so to use N you really really need to go entirely with one vendor right now for all your wireless adapters and your router/ap as theres a good chance youll have problems if you bought say, a linksys n adapter now and a dlink n router in a few months. A lot of people are going N despite it being only draft, and seem to like it, but unless you're ready to go all out to start with I dont see the point in it.

Ive used some dlink pci and usb adapters and havent had any problems with them. I wouldnt expect any problems with any of the 3 you listed, however.

Edimax - PCI http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16833315041

Driver/Utility for Windows 98SE/Me/2K/XP/XP 64/Vista/Vista 64

However if your Wireless source is low and or noisy it might be that No card in the world would help you.

May be you should replace the Wireless Router with this.

Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 $64

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16833162134

Or, Asus WL-520GU

This is $45 after Rebate, Free ship. http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16833320023

If you need more features Flash it with DD-WRT ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DD-WRT ).

If needed.

-----------------------------

As an indirect side Note. If While you are gaming an other computer does torrent with the Wireless, it is just as bad since it creates heavy load on the Wireless that is used for both computers.

None of the Entry Level Router stand well very heavy P2P downloads.

I'm steering totally clear of Netgear. I bought a 802.11b series router from them that they failed to support. All of their support went to india and the router issues were heat related... Netgear basically did a poor job engineering and they've had MANY of their routers be resold on the refurb market. You'll see them on woot every few months. They were a better company in the late 90s...

I would look at Linksys or Buffalo. I've had some good experiences out of dlink too. Most of their interfaces are easy to use and the hardware has been stable for all that I've run. I've only had a few issues with my Linksys hardware on Comcast, but most seem to be some kind of weird DHCP or ARP problem on the Comcast side. They usually go away after respoofing my router MAC address.
