Wireless problems after upgrading to SP-2

Microsoft's so-called "improvements" to WZC (Wireless Zero Configuration) have seemed to totally kill Internet access over wireless. I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 V.4.0 wireless router (Wireless-B) and I've been connecting with both a Netgear WAB501 card (Wireless A/B) and a Linksys WPC54G card (Wireless-G). Both do the exact same things:

1) I can connect to the router just fine to modify settings (i.e. logging into 192.168.1.1) over the wireless connection.

2) I cannot access Internet over wireless, even though I'm connected fine to the router.

3) When I connect the laptop via hard-wired Ethernet, I can get on the Internet just fine!

Now, I've tried resetting the router BACK to defaults and I have tried resetting both my cable modem and the Linksys router several times. Nothing works. Once in a while when the wireless card is hunting for access points, it'll display a message that the WZC service is stopped, forcing me to go into services and re-enable it. That's totally ridiculous. I never had this problem with SP-1 or on my Mac.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

In WinXP and XPSP1 there is a Windows Zero Configuration (WZC).

Microsoft Improved the WZC with the rlease of WinXP SP2.

Microsoft provides it as an added service to Windows Network system. However they can not force the manufacturer of the Wireless Hardware to conform to this add-on.

Some manufacturer do not care whether it is conforming to WZC, some might deliberately make it not conforming (this is especially so with the Entry Level Wireless Brands).

I would suggest to use first the manufacturer drivers, and utility. If it does not work with the manufacturer driver and utility take it with the Brand's Support Tech.

Once it is working with the above, and you want to try for easier configuration you might try WZC, YMMV.

Most Recent Wireless Hardware with WZC has a better chance than any of the past combination.

P.S. If you wonder why then the whole WZC thingie is necessary.

Well, I bought recently 22 wirelesses PCMCIA for my company. Before actually buying them I made sure that they do work correctly with WZC. Its sure make life easy that every one can use the cards in his Laptop with no need to deal with additional software.

My neighbor had the same problem with his Netgear setup. We tried everything and ended up doing a system restore to a point before he installed SP2. Now everything works great.

I do not plan on installing SP2 on any of my computers for quite a while.
