Wireless pritning speeds slow with WPA, normal without

Simple setup, all wireless as follows:

Dell Laptop ((((( Linksys WRT54G ))))) HP PhotoSmart 2710

Printing speeds are excruciatingly slow with WPA enabled. So slow that Windows reports the job as failing, even though after several minutes, the enitre job will finish. It will print out a few lines, pause for a while, then resume. A packet capture shows traffic to the printer from the PC during these idle moments, as if the PC is sending more parts of the print job.

When the encryption is disabled, printing returns to very fast. Should I point the finger at the printer? Anyone ever see anything similar?

What version is the router (1-5) and do you have the latest firmware for it? I use WPA and the print speeds thru my LAN are no different than when WPA is disabled.

It's a V5 and the firmware is not the latest. I didn't flash to the latest, as it was the very last thing I checked before leaving and didn't want to risk losing my settings.

But here's the thing: surfing speeds (i.e. laptop -> router -> internet) are equally fast with WPA and without. It's as if the printer is not able to "digest" the data when encrypted.
