I have 3 laptops, two of which are identical in hardware configuration, OS, and drivers. I'll refer to them as laptop 1 and laptop 2. They both have built in 802.11b wireless and are running WinXP pro with the latest updates. The XP 'security center' has been disabled and I'm running no firewall. The third is a dell lat. D600 running windows 2000 pro and has a senao 200mW 802.11b wifi card with external antenna.
I've set up laptop 1 and the dell to be on a wireless peer-to-peer network so I can grab some files off of laptop 1 from the dell. It was rather painless to set up: Using the the software that came with my senao card I created the settings for a adhoc network, SSID, channel and no encryption. Laptop 1 then boots up and winXP automatically detects the network and I connect. No problems whatsoever and I can transfer files and power down.
Next up is laptop 2. Same procedure and laptop 2 connects but it never stays connected. Every time it finishes connected in disconnects itself. IPCONFIG either says there is no IP address (media disconnected) or has an IP of 0.0.0.0 Laptop 2 will connect and remain connected to an access point style network, but it never stays connected for more than 2 seconds on the peer-to-peer style network. Any ideas on what is going on here? Is there an easier way of setting up a peer-to-peer network? Any software that lets you control all network settings for any wifi card?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
