Does it matter what wireless PCI adapter i get?

it depends. i didn't like the linksys wireless pci card because i thought the wireless connection software was bloated, plus the driver installation was a nightmare. i like my trendnet though. a nice and simple software interface.

other things to look for (if you care about these), wpa, 128kb wep encryption, ability to work with certain software like airopeek or kismet (doesn't kismet support vary depending on the chipset?), etc.

PCI cards are usually good but the quality of the connection might depends on where physically there are installed.

Why?

Wireless is depending on signal propagation.

PCI Wireless Client Card ends up been stuck behind the computer's case, resultant in obstructed transmission and poor performance.

Using USB mght be at times better solution. USB is connected to the Port with 2-3' cable allowing the Antenna to be placed above the System for better Transmission.

However a PCI card is a good choice when a powerful external Antenna is needed for long distance. Many Wireless PCI cards come with a removable Antenna.

There are some PCI wireless cards that have external antennas you can stick on top or around your case. The edimax ones at newegg are like this. I've got two and have had no problems. They're also $25.50 (last time I checked). :beer:

I've dealt with way too many hidden pci wireless cards. Please do go the usb route.

This card comes with a decently long cable to an external antenna. I get great signal on multiple OSes.

Ditto on my experience. I've used SMC Usb adapters to setup a network to my office in a detached building over a 75' span with no problem
