Most casual interlopers will be stopped by a passworded screen saver. And that is FREE! Determined perps won't be stopped by that thing. So what's the sense?

Yeah, but for a screensaver to useful it needs to come on in under a minute or two....which means it will come on all the time for me when i'm sitting at my desk, which is aggrevating. The kindof users i have in mind to keep off the laptop are the kind that would never figure their way around it....

If the built-in screensavers of Windwoes don't allow the setting of a hotkey combo to kick it on, then the third-party ones do, so you can set the screensaver to never come on by itself, but only when you key it on. Perhaps there is a freeware utility out there that will create a hotkey for the Windwoes screen saver.

Here is one Shareware utility (no known limitations) that is a generalized HotKey creator that can do the Win screen saver and there are lots of others out there: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Active_Keys_d1484.html

And here's one strictly for the screen saver and it's free and extremely small (< 100kB):
