Okay, so I bought a D-link Air Pro wireless Network card for my laptop. It is the dwl-a650 802.11a card

It seemed to cheap to pass it up. I read about it in the Hot Deals forums and picked it up.

I have long wanted to run a wireless network at home.

My existing setup is this 3 desktops and one laptop on a 5 port switch using proxy software to get internet access via my cable modem.

I am only allowed 3 ip's so I am running proxy software.

Onto the questions:

802.11a vs 802.11b (is it worth it? routers for 802.11a seem expensive should I just sell the card I bought?)

What is the cheapest (that works!) way to get my laptop wireless on my existing wired network?

I got a Linksys WAP11 802.11b wireless access point on a hot deal from Office Depot for $70 and a Netgear MA401 802.11b PC Card for $25 from amazon.com. That's wireless for a notebook for under $100.

802.11a is too expensive to use at home, IMO.
