wireless only works when wired

I have an Actiontec DSL gateway (modem) and a Dlink DI-624 router (router).

I have an odd situation where I can plug the router into the modem and the ethernet light on the modem will flash periodically. I can connect to the network but not the internet.
Then I plug a computer into the modem and both ethernet lights on the modem will come on and flash in unison. I can now connect wirelessly to the internet.
When I then unplug the computer the ethernet connection to the router will sometimes revert to flashing periodically and sometimes stay solid. If it stays solid I can connect to the internet, otherwise I cannot.
Eventually the modem will drop the router again and I will have to plug a computer back in.

Sadly I cannot leave a computer plugged into the modem, nor should I have to...right?
Is this a problem with the modem, router, me or the software/firmware?

Thanks for your help.

I'm actually on a static IP from my ISP...and it doesnt matter what computer I connect to the modem as long as there is a computer connected. It seems as tho when I disconnect the router from the modem and only have the computer connected the same thing happens...I seem to have to have both connected.

That is strange because this modem is over 2 years old and has been running with only a computer connected to it for about 6 months now.

Thanks for the link BTW
Any more thoughts?

The 624 is most likely trying to run on a different subnet than the Actiontec.

When it is working catch what IP address you are getting by doing IPCONFIG /all

Then go into the LAN setting of your 624 and set an IP address close to what you just got when connected.

That should settle your mystery.

So you're saying grab the IP that my laptop ethernet card is on and force the 624 to that?

Isnt it assigned dynamically by the modem/router?

EDIT> Tried setting the IP to a similar address, no go, didnt help anything sadly.
I'm also having troubles getting to the actiontec setup utility on the modem because the IP address used to be the same as the 624 but got taken by it, now I'm not sure how to access it.

No,,

Log into the router , advanced and performance , set preamble to Long

Home and wireless, channel 11.

and make sure ur wirless laptop has no Firewalls, and no STATIC ip on it.

if wired works the router connecting is fine dont need to change the ip of the router.

IP address was the same for both units??? Both the Modem and 624 have resets, usualy by a sall hole and you use a paper clip to push it in for about 5 seconds and everything goes back to defaults.
