Wireless Noob Needs Info

I have SBC DSL and use a 2Wire Home Portal 1800G.

Last night SBC tech support suggested that I call today about being able to receive DSL in my computer lab which is beyond the range of my wireless. I called and they suggested using a PC Port in the lab. It just sounds too good to be true. I called tech support again just to verify that the PC Port would do the job. They assured me that it would, so I ordered one from SBC.

This one is for you smart guys and gals. How the heck does this device work?

I'm just curious.

Thanks.

Unless you have some strange Electrical system on premises, it should work.

HPNA is Not so popular among Netwokers.

HPNA is to Networker as eMachine is to a Gamer😉.

Yes but the alternative is (gag) dialup. This is for a "play" computer which I will use very seldom.

I really am curious as to how it works.

Thanks for the reply.

It uses the 110VAC Electrical wires that are installed in the house to transfer modulated signal that includes the Network Traffic.

The hardware is consisting of adaptors that are plug into the Wall outlet and the Computer Ethernet Cable is plugged into the adaptor.

It works well, but it is limited in speed and the variety of hardware is very limited.

The 110VAC line are very Noisy and spiky so it is hard the get a fast clean signal through, as a result the Network ?Speed? is limited to about 11Mb/sec.

However, it does serve a good purpose when NO other options are available.

Thanks, Jack.

The unit I purchased does not use the electrical lines. Instead it uses the telephone lines.

edit: Link not working

I've done some research waiting for replies so I'm sure I am sufficiently briefed. It should be here in three days so we'll see what kind of results I experience.

I am sorry it is late at night and I confused HPNA with Power Plug.

In any case, the concept is similar to what I described above only that the telephone line is used as opposed to the power line.

For the record, the PC Port came Friday afternoon and it works perfectly.

Didn't even know that this product existed.

Once again, I'm a happy camper.
