Wireless, Noise Cancelling Headphones? Which Model (between 4)? Or do wireless phones stink?

OK, I'm looking for some wireless, rechargable headphones with noise cancelling. I've pretty much narrowed it down to these, and I'd like you opinions on them all if you can. If you absolutely must suggest an alternative, do, but I'd like noise cancelling (with on/off) and not be burning up batteries, price range is ~$200. Links below.

Sennheiser RS-85

Sony MDR-RF975RK

AKG Acoustics K 506 AFC

AKG Acoustics K 406 AFC

Also, if in your experience you've found that wireless headphones really suck, please recommend some wired phones with noise cancelling that can be toggled on and off so I can listen to music without going through batteries if I don't need the noise cancelling.

Though I know nothing about those two models, I'll always trust sennheiser products over sonys when it comes to headphones. Hands down.

I would avoid active noise canceling, in general noise cancellation phones have too much money in electronics & not enough where it really counts - The sound quality. Wireless is much the same way. Not to mention the ever present hiss that seems inherent to current noise cancelling cans.

For $200 you could get a very, very nice pair of sealed ear canal headphones.

I would look at the Etymotic ER-4S. 23 db of isolation. If you don't plan on taking headphone listening to it's extreme (source + amp + expensive cables + ...) then the ER-4P may be better for you, it's the low impedance version better suited for use from portables. These are both $249. There is a ER6 that is cheaper, at roughly half the cost.

Sony actually makes a couple ear canal phones worth looking at, the EX71 and EX51 are both well regarded. I paid $40 for a pair of EX51's to use on a recent plane trip, they sound pretty damn good for $40. I would say they give my Grado SR-60's a decent run.

If I hadn't been pressed for time on the Sony's I'd have gotten the EX71's here

Make sure you check out the forums over at http://www.head-fi.org/ as well as http://www.headphone.com/. Headphone.com is a store, but they do very candid opinions of the products they sell.

Superfreaky,

what's the point of posting the same exact message ten minutes apart. We read it the first time.

I wanted to stay away from canal headphones, just because they're uncomfortable to me. Since you suggest I ditch the noise cancelling, could you suggest a pair of closed, wired phones with pretty good isolation for about $200?

why do you want noise canceling, its oinly good for mechanical drones, like airplane hum.

Actually I'm getting more and more turned off to the noise cancelling. Can you recommend some wired or wireless phones without it for about $200?

the sony v6 or sony 7506 is a good choice for ~70

the sennheiser hd280 should do you well also ~80

i would go with AKG K240S / 'k240 studio' and an amplifier. 100$ for headphones and 100$ for amplifier...which is to your budget 🙂

sennheiser 580-590-600 for 200dollar level. v6 is like 50 dollar level😛 also depends if you have amp power or not, 590 easier to drive then 580. 590 more comfy as it goes all the way around ur ears, 580 has slightly better sound. its subjective at that high level. go to the headfi/headphone links posted above. these are open headphones, allow noise leak in and out for better sound, not good for public areas. closed headphones can also be found.

I really need some closed phones without an amp, as my primary usage area is a college dorm room.

Most of the good stuff is open, but you do have some options.

Sennheiser makes some good sealed models that top out at around $250. AKG also has a few, but again once you go into the $200 range (where high end headphones start) it's practically all open.

Sennheiser HD280 Pro's = $100
Sennheiser HD 250 II = $180
Sennheiser HD 25 = $200

If you're looking for some SERIOUS isolation, check these out. 45 db! Dunno about the sound quality but 45 db is insane. 😀

Look around on head-fi, there are tons of people far more knowledgeable than me & they're a pretty helpful group.

I agree...why get noise cancelation when you can get isolation? I own a pair of the EX71's myself and they pretty much block out everything except the loudest screaming.

i have seinhenniser wirelesses... they're great. i have the RS45, it does auto tuning in one button.. works fine for me. 🙂

How often do you get hissing or static because of the wireless? How's the range? Do they have good isolation (can you hear sounds around you or not)?
