Hi,

Am just trying out wireless networking for the 1st time...and have plugged a couple of Netgear MA101 USB adapters into a Win98 P3 machine an a WinXP Pro XP1700+ machine.

It detects the network which I have named "Trevillion" but does not allow me to browse it, keeps referring me to the "Network Troubleshooter" etc. I think I have set it up correct at both ends but it's not exactly easy as the WinXP machine uses a built in configuration panel while an extra Netgear one is installed on the Win98 PC during driver install.

Any tips? Security is off at the moment because it kep saying "Disable encryption to join network on the Win98 PC"

Thanks,

Jamie

Since you mention no Access Point, only client adapters.....Do you have both adapters in "Ad Hoc" mode? If you have them in Infrastructure they will not associate to each other, only to an AP. Beyond that the SSID and channel are generally the only things you have to configure out of the box in an Ad Hoc situation. You might double check to see that no WEP key is keyed into the adapters advanced properties tab.

Have it set up to Ad-Hoc mode, WEP was enabled at one end so disabled it there so that both have no WEP. The Windows 98 Machine seems to automatically pick the channel up off the Windows XP machine....there does not appear to be an option to change the change on the XP Machine.

SSID??

Is there any other considerations? Anything that would be fine on a normal network but is not ok on wireless than I might have set up?

Cheers,

Corm

Well I managed to get 1 of the 2 sets of machines I was trying to connect to work for the most part, the OS involved are Windows XP Home & Windows 98SE, heres whats working

98SE able to access XP's internet connection (has been shared)
98SE able to access XP's shared folders/drives
98SE able to access XP's printers

But the XP machine is not able to access the 98SE machine, it keeps saying that it's unable to access it and something about permission and contacting the network administrator.

Am baffled....
