wireless networks?

I've read about people using 'someone elses' wireless network/internet to do various things..
somehow i guess you can find a wireless stream? and use it for yourself like walking down the street or something or other..
how does this work? anyone know where i can find more information about this?
 
First, you need to understand wireless technology (the use of the word "stream" seems to indicate that you are not terribly familiar with it). Please see the Networking forum, but don't ask for advice on hacking other people's networks there, because it's frowned upon.
