How reliable are they? Do I run a good chance of corrupting a file if I transfer maybe 700MB from one computer to another? And it's going to span 3 floors - one in the basement, one on the first floor, and 2 on the second. OSes will include XP, Linux (probably Mandrake), ME, 98.

Any specific good (but affordable) models you recommend?

My other option is an ethernet home network, but chances are sorta slim since it's a hassle to run cables over 3 floors, but if it has a lot more benefits over wireless, then I'll go with it.

It won't corrupt the file(s), I've sent and received hundreds of gb wirelessly (it takes hours and hours)....and it all turned out ok. Your problem may be getting a signal through 3 floors, not file corruption.

For any kind of streaming media or file sharing, go with a hardwired connection. Its much faster...and also you wont have the problem of your neighbors (especially the tech savvy ones) hacking your wireless connection and changing your router password.
