Wireless Networking Techies: What is going on...

...my friend (same one as b4 😉 ) has a wireless setup using a D-LINK router and D-LINK cards. He has two pcs and a laptop. One of the PCs is about 4 feet from the router, the laptop is upstairs far away, and the last pc is directly above the router in the room above him(about 12 feet or so).

Now his internet works absolutely fine on the laptop and the Computer that is like 4 feet away...but he cannot get it to work on the computer directly above him. It runs Win2kpro w/sp3 (VS XP Home on the other laptops) and he can get the connection to work for about 2-5 minutes and then it dies on him...EVERYTIME. We called D-link support and got these guys with REALLY REALLY thick Austrailian Accents and it wasn't funny because we'd ask them to repeat what they said about 10 times each sentece that we started to piss them off. then we got adelphia and thankfully people who spoke "american english" and he went through the entire setup checking and rechecking and making sure things were in proper working order. He pinged the computer a few times (actually I think he pinged the cable modem since the router had a firewall that wouldn't let him go further) and all seemed fine...yet it would keep happening. The internet would work for 2-5 minutes and then disconnect for no apparant reason.

Does anyone have an idea? Networking really isn't my forte and even the D-Link guy was gett flustered over the inability to find out why all the sudden the connection just cuts off...even if there was heavy interference the PC is 12 feet away at the most and the Cable Modem is sitting on this big cabinet.

Thanks AT!!!

Tell him to download the latest drivers from the D-Link ftp site. It'll update the firmware of the wireless card too.

Has he got the internet set to disconnect after x time? I dont know whether this would have an effect but it may do i guess, pretty simple thing to forget about...

[Edit] I would also tell your friend to get his own AT account😉 [/Edit]

Does this little popup bubble show up about every three minutes? If so, go into the Windows management applet for your wireless connection and UNcheck 802.1x authentication. That authentication method requires the presence of a RADIUS (or acceptable substitute) server, which you probably don't have. The default behavior is for you to lose the connection every three minutes if a certificate isn't received.

Shamelessly stolen from prosiac in the Networking forum

Confused

Hey guys...where is this "Windows Management Applet" for wireless connection?

My friend cannot find it at all and I'm talking to him via the phoen....any idea where it is

Erm, go to the properties for the wireless network connection, and one of the tabs will have an option mentioning 802.1x authentication, and uncheck the box

Confused

He went to the "D-link Airplus Window" - There are a bunch of tabs (5) called "Link Info" "Configuration" "Encryption" "Site Survery" and "About"

NONE of them have something that says, "802.1x Authentication"

BUT

In the Encryption area he has a checkbox called "Data Encryption".. It is unchecked by default. If he cehcks it a thing called "Authentication Mode" which he can pick "AUTO Authentication" "Shared Authentication" or "Open Authentication"

Is that what you are talking about? There is nothing about 802.1x AUthentication. Should he have Data Encryption enabled by default or no? Thanks!

bump

If this is the case he is going to return it and have no access...He would return the Dlink router but his dad bought it and since it works fine on the father's vaio and laptop he sees no problem with it...and the other part is he won't allow it hardwired (Which is the best way IMO)

Right, get him to right click on My Network Places, and go to Properties (or go to Control Panel, Network Connections). Then, right click on the wireless network connection, and go to Properties. Then, click on the tab that says Authentication, and then the first thing listed there is "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network", make sure that is unchecked.

Confused

Wireless stuff is all funny. Maybe after people are done solving this, they can help me solve the mystery as to why my wireless PC in the next room from the router has a low signal while my bros laptop 2 floors down and in the basement gets excellent reception, and also why my PC is slow with wireless and the laptop is super quick.

I just want to make sure this is for Win2k? I called him and told him this but he had uninstalled the card so he said he would reconnect it and try it...while he does that right now I just want to verify this is for Win2k mainly because I've seen the properties for 2k (his rig) and xp (other rig) and things are in different areas 🙂

Just had him do it but one problem: there is no authentication tab. HE has a general and sharing tab but no authentication tab. This is Win2k SP3 🙂 What is going on out of curiosity and why is this authentication thing so elusive?

Aight, we finally got the authentication tab to appear.

Disabling it does nothing

But to get it working again he does this: right click on 'me network places.' click on properties. right click on 'local area connection 2'(that is my wireless LAN connection). click on properties. click on configure botton (it is to configure the actual D link AirPlus DWL-520+ Wireless PCI Adapter card). then click on the advanced tab. then select the authentication mode choice. then on the right i switch between 'open authentication' and 'shared authentication.' there is also (in the same area as 'open authentication and shared authentication' an option to choose 'auto switch'...which is default and therefore has not worked for me in the past.

for me to get my internet to work i must switch between shared and open authentication mode when the internet stops working...which is like every 3 minutes or so.

It all depends on what is between you and the ap. Try moving your pc somewhere else in the room or a different room and see if the signal gets better. If that helps, you may be in a dead spot were something is blocking your signal.. ducting or a series of copper pipes

This same problem happens even if he moves his computer right next to the router...and where his room is he gets 98%+ on the signal strength and quality (or whatever the two things are called) mainly becuase his house has low ceilings and his room is right by the cable modem

Actually, I wasn't referring to your problem. But I will now. When you say it "dies" does the signal go completely dead or do you just loose connection (ie can't access network computers or internet). If the signal is going completely dead you probably have a bad card. have you tried swapping cards?
