Wireless Networking on existing LAN

Here's the scenario:

Existing LAN of 3 PCs + 1 laptop on a Windows 2000 domain.

If I want a wireless access to the network ONLY for the laptop, must I change my whole existing network into wireless? Or can I add an access point to the server and add a PCMCIA wireless card on the laptop?

I'd rather keep 100 Mbps LAN for the "immobile" units and just provide a wireless LAN access for the laptop.

So can I keep the existing LAN and just add one access point and one wireless card on the laptop? Will the laptop be able to log-in to my Windows 2000 domain and access other computers on the LAN?

Thanks.

You will be able to just add the access point to the LAN and then add the Wireless Card to the laptop and you should have full access top your network. No need to convert all to wireless (nor would you want to, unless you have physical cable limitations.)

There is another possibility. You can get 2 wireless cards and string them together without the access point. The only drawbacks are the range gets limited to about 130 feet in a line of sight direction without obstructions and the notebook computer will only be able to see the other computer with the wireless NIC.

There are two solutions.

The one that was suggested by Rblount, which will run for about $250 for Wireless entry point, and $100 for Wireless card.

The second suggestion by Nosferatu, can be purchased as a set for about $250.

The second solution cost $100 less, but it is very limited in nature. Unless you absolutely sure that you will never have more then two computers, it is pointless. It also needs the use of ICS software, so make sure that it can accommodate Win2K, and Win98

The whole area of Wireless networking is starting to commercially ?explode?.

Within short period of time there will be cheaper and more variety of solutions.

The best solution for two computers will come in the form of Small USB Modules that you stick to the USB port of each computer, load the drivers and you are in business. One company already sells it but since they are the only one they charge $500 for the kit, once more manufactures come out with such a product, it will go down to $200 or less.
