Wireless networking and roadrunner

I am extremely new to wireless networking, in fact...I have never done it before. I am moving into an apartment with two other guys in June and we are getting both Time Warner Cable and Road Runner. We have three network ports throughout the house. Now, TWC said that for us to do more than that they would have to set something up and it would cost us. But wouldnt a simple cable splitter from Radio Shack be able to let us use a TV and a computer hooked up to the same port? Also, one of my friends has a laptop and would like to be able to connect to the internet wirelessly. How could we do this? I am aware that there are different types of wireless routes such as 802.1a, 802.1b, and 802.1g but I dont understand the differences. Considering that we are using Road Runner, and that we are college students on a budget, are there any suggestions as to which route to go?

Thanks.
Tim

Heres the deal:

Cable from the wall goes into two way signal splitter. One cable feeds TV the other feeds the cable Modem. Ethernet cable out of cable modem to wireless router (802.11b is way faster than your cable connection will ever be) Ethernet cable from router to NIC on PC 1 then use wireless for the other PC/s laptops.

do as drainbamge says best way to go and cheapest. and easiest. wirelessrouters r down in price and wireless nics r down also. biggest thing is to remember make sure all wireless compatons work togther. dont by like 802.11a i think wont work with b and g works with a but not b or somehting like that . 95% of th eboxes tell u want is what. goo dluck and enjoy once set up
