My house has a wireless network router, 2.4 ghz and it works well for my dad's laptop. Recently ive built my own computer, and in order to register my windows XP i need internet, now, because its wireless i want a wireless card, i have questions hence:
1) can i only get a Linksys brand card? (our router is linksys)
2) if i dont have to get a Linksys card, what do you dudes reccomend?
3) are those USB adapters anygood? if so, would you reccomend them over a PCI?

thx!

You can get any wireless card, nearly ALL are compatable. Secondly, USB ones are slower and not as reliable. However, I use a dell trumobile (from an old comp) and do not have any problems w/ it. However, i only get 11mbs transfer. Also, i have a q, is the router a b or g?

I would suggest getting the Linksys card, It probably would be more compatible. I also would suggest going with pci card.

Get the linksys PCI. Configuration of Linksys will be easier since you will be using a linksys router especially for WEP.

I have used several brands of 802.11b-g notebook adapter cards with my Linksys wirless router including Linksys. I am now using a Microsoft mn-720 Notebook adaptor (802.11G) and it works great. I have not had any problems getting any brand of adaptor I have tried to work with the Router. That is the whole point about the WIFI standard! I would recomend you stick with a good brand name but they should all work about the same!

how come no one mentioned orinoco!!!!!

orinoco is the best. Also for compatibility and such, it does not matter which brand you get.

oh yeah, make sure you have the 128-bit encryption for your wireless, otherwise others can jack your internet 😛
