Wireless Network

I am thinking about setting up a wireless network between my house and my friends house 300ft away; I opted for USB because I heard signal propagation is better, I narrowed it down between these two:

Benq
Compex
(both adapters have Ad-Hoc capabilities)

The Benq adapter does not have an external antenna, would this be a problem? because I might use the adapters for a greater distance(500ft or greater).
If I shared internet access wirelessly would I loose bandwidth on a computer, if one of the two computers is using a lot of bandwidth?

Any Help/Information would be appreciated

😀

300ft? isn't that kind of pushing the range limit? I have enough trouble with a going through two floors in my house with a router and an Orinoco card.... i would laugh at any range estimates that the companies give you.... but maybe thats just me? Good luck

I thought 300ft would be a resonable range because my the signal on my 900mhz phone works fine for about 130ft and the base for the phone is inside my house and windows are closed; therefore I assumed 2.4ghz would be able to pull off 300ft...

if you have line of sight between the two client devices you might have a shot. Pretty unlikely but perhaps. You'll probably end up with PCI adapter cards and PC cards with posts that will allow you to attach a pigtail and directional antenna. The USB, or any other stock client adapter for that matter, will have an omni directional antenna, propagating the signal in a 360 degree radius. The radiation pattern is not directed, therefore much weaker in a situation your describing, a point to point link. If you do go with USB clients, I'd make real sure you got them from a place with a good return policy if the point to point is the only reason you need them.

Actually the higher the frequency the worse its penetration will be. 900mhz will penetrate obstructions better than 2.4ghz

I've had pretty good luck, providing that you get good placement on the antennas. If there are no walls between the units, and only a couple of windows, you might make 300 feet. I had a weak signal, good enough for a constant 1Mbit connection, at the neighbors, through 3 walls and 200 feet. Sometimes it would pop up to 2 Mbit.
