Wireless network up to a mile?

I'm going to be moving to a place about a mile from a friend's house, and would like to share internet access. According to Yahoo maps it's 9 blocks driving, and I guess 6 blocks as the crow flies. I've heard of people being able to access signals from parking lots with wireless.. can someone suggest a cheap wireless standard that would work?

If necessary, there's another person 2 blocks from me to act as a repeater.
Thanks.

Make a parabolic dish out of aluminum foil and aim it his house. 😉 Take it seriously if you wish

oh yeah 400th post 😀

At a mile you'll need clear line of sight. You just mentioned distance but if their are houses or trees etc between you and your friend then you'll be getting above them or finding another solution besides wireless. If you have good line of sight then a mid gain yagi, 7-9 dBi, at each end will work. Your still going to need to elevate to get past any fresnel zone concerns, like from the second story if your houses are two story. 1 mile isn't that far for a microwave link, but there are requirements that have to be met to have a solid link.

Sadly, the place I have is an apartment building, and I don't think I have line of sight for the 7 blocks. 🙁
I really appreciate the advice though.. Do most people who set up these antennas own, or how to they talk their landlords into putting this on the roof?

That all depends on your lease. For example a lot of apartments won't even let you have DirecTV. Some will but say that the antennae can't be mounted to their building (it has to be on a stand or something to that effect).

If you're wanting to know all you have to do is ask your apartment's manager.

I don't sell this particular Zoom product but you can get the Zoom Air Wireless Point to Point kit for about $1,000 which is half the cost of other Products out there. The Zoom Air was demonstrated to make the connection 2.5 miles across the Grand Canyon.
