Generally, I am a wired networking kind of guy. Never really went all wireless until now.

To sum things up, I had a Linksys G router I got from BF 2006 for $20. It has worked great since the start. But when I added a second computer to the network and try to stream audio from the other, I get skips and pauses. The signal on both computers according to windows was 4/5 bars and had no problem sticking with the full 54mbps rate on pc1, but my new n-wireless card in pc2 did have issues with fluctuating the rate a bit.

I replaced the router assuming it might be bad as it was also a compact g router that linksys had at the low end using cut down parts and been through a lot. i got a refurb netgear n router for a good price and also added a d-link NAS with a 750GB samsung F1 drive. Both cards hold a very steady 54mbps rate and 5/5 bars in windows. I am ready to RAID1 the NAS with the 750gb left on pc1, but have to copy the data over the network to the NAS, and it seems sluggish at first glance, it will pull anywhere from 700KBps to 2.2MBps.

What could be the bottleneck? I have the latest drivers installed for both adapters and the NAS, and am mapping the files as a network drive in windows on both machines.

Is wireless really this slow or do i have a software problem? vista32 on pc1, win7beta64 on pc2. both joined to local workgroup.

That's normal for wireless.. It's slow. Read the sticky regarding changing channels and antenna position. The absolute best you can get from G in a pristine environment is about 22 Mbs, or around 2.2 MBs actual throughput.

half duplex = 1/2 the speed of 54Mbps. Most speed test I did for a wireless G network averages around 20Mbps, right within your ballpark figures.
