wireless network speed issue.

I have a linksys router and when I hard wire the computer to it I get about 3 megabits a second.

When I connect through wireless, even right next to the router I get about 2 mb/sec.

I have tried other computers and the results are the same.

I tried another model of linksys router and the same thing is happening.

Is it a wireless router issue in general or a linksys one?

I don't get it, I mean it's connected at 54 mb/sec wirelessly so I would think it wouldn't drop the speed to below 3 mb/sec

expect a hit in bandwidth using wireless over wired if you are using any encription. That loss is based on the bandwidth of the internet connection.

Since you are only getting 3Mbps of internet service, you have to take the 3Mbps and reduce it since that's the rate of the data being encrypted and decrypted.

Not in 4+ years has encryption made any performance hit on wireless. That's just pure nonsense.

The reason why it's slower, is well, wireless is SLOW. You can't control the frequency/radio spectrum and other devices using it to cause interferrance.

OP - change channels on your router to 1, 6, 11 and see what works best.

Couple of things, I tried with encrytion and without and the results were the same.

Second, if I were to transfer data over the wireless connection locally I think it would get past 2 mb/sec so I don't understand how it would limit the internet connection to that. if you were to say upgrade the internet connection speed to 6 mb/sec would the wireless then reach maybe 4 or 5 mb/sec?

Would they be different for the wireless connection and different for the lan connection?

When the computer was connected directly to the router with ethernet it worked at full speed.
