Wireless network - random lag spikes

I have a D-link wireless adapter for my PC as well as a D-Link access point... Every 60 seconds or so, my pings time out completely for 5-10 seconds. This makes gaming very nerve-wracking. I have searched and noted that this is a fairly common problem with wireless gamers, but haven't seen a fix other than to switch to a wired connection.

Any advice?

try channels 1, 6, 11 on your access point.

When I change the channels... I can't seem to get reconnected. The AP atill shows up in my list of detected networks, but for some reason I couldn't connect when the channel was anything other than 6. I'll try some more when I get home tonight.
