Wireless Network Problems :(

Equipment:

MR814 Router Netgear
(2) MA111 USB wireless

Right out of the box I've been having issues with this setup. If I reboot the router, and just hook up one of the wireless machines, I can get a full 2.4mbits from my ISP on a bandwidth test. When both have been hooked up for a while, I cant get faster than 140kB/s between the two clients, and I can't get faster than 300kbits (80% or more speed drop).

Do I have some settings wrong? Even when I have one plugged directly into the router via Ethernet, these issues remain, including the decrease in speed from the internet, even on the directly cabled machine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I've gone through everything I can think of on my own.

Distance and signal quality will ultimately determine how much you'll get through the system. Remember, to talk from one client to another, they usually are set to go through the AP. It you want to test the client side of the link, set both clients to "Ad Hoc" and give them a common link ID (you'll only be able to talk client-to-client this way).

Any other 2.4 G devices may interfere (wireless phones, for example). You may want to try moving the AP. Since 2.4G is such a short wavelength, you may only need to move it an inch or two to make a difference. Same for the clients.

The closer you can get to "line of sight" the better. Every bounce or skip on a surface that's not completely smooth will degrade the signal significantly, and some textures can generate enough multipath or degrade the signal enough to significantly impact your throughput.

It is possible to have near 100% signal STRENGTH with a marginal signal QUALITY (meaning, greatly reduced throughput).

Good Luck

They are each about 3 feet from the AP.

I turnedd off and disconnected the one wireless phone we had just in case.

When I go to site survey, I see signal is only 30% or something weird like that. But under signal strength/quality they are both at 100%

But the real issue isnt the wireless throughput. My machine connected directly to the AP/router with an ethernet cable suffers the same connection speed issues.

I set up AD-HOC like you suggested..... They ran at 5mbps easy, no problems. Im guessing it has something to do with the router then :/
