Wireless Network Problem

A few weeks back, I set up a simple wireless network for my doctor for simple file sharing between his laptop and his seceretarys desktop. Purchased 2 Linksys WPC11 PCMCIA Wireless Network Cards and a BEFW11S4 Access Point/4 Port Switch/Cable+DSL Router. The laptop is in his office, and the desktop for his seceratary in the room right next to his. It was working ok at first, but the signal was always very weak.(the rooms are less than 10 feet apart, with the access point placed in the doctors office) About 2 weeks ago it just crapped out. I moved the access point and it started working again. Last week it crapped out again, I moved the access point and it worked again(very low signal quality btw) My question is why is this happening if the rooms are only 10 feet apart? Its supposed to work way further than that. Any help would be appreciated!

The Wireless manufactures are relatively careful. They usually claim a solid distance when they put the equipment on two towers with no Visual and electrical interference.

Indoors it is any body guess, in part, because our environment includes a lot of transmission obstructions. (Electrical Screening). Most places have Insulation with Aluminum Foil cover, metal screens, cordless telephones, microwave etc. Out door trees, buildings, electrical lines etc.

Under optimal condition, i.e. the two wireless stations are in the same room, and the encryption is off, you get a transfer of 6-7Mb/sec.

Most Wireless instruments lose ?speed? when encryption is on, the BEFW11S4 is one of the low end, loses 50% with WEP on.

If the same hardware stays make sure that you have the latest firmware in the Router, and place the Router, in high position at about room center, with no obstruction (beside th walls) toward the direction of the secretary office.

A better hardware combo is: SMC Wireless Barricade, and Lucent Orinoco Gold Client Card.

had simular problem.
Got replacement to Lucent, MUCH better. Also 2.4Gh phone system, microwave can "help" to lose connection.

Like IgorTs said, Orinoco has much better performance.

The reviews I've seen for the Linksys WPC11 (and similar) cards are pretty weak.
