I am out of range for any type of broadband services so i am wondering if there is anyway i could connect to a friend who lives 2 miles away and use his internet connection? I have been doing quite a bit of reading on atennas but i am unsure on what would be the best for me.

I live on the top of a pretty big hill and can look down upon the town where my friend lives, surely this would help my cause.

get dish style antennas on both ends and just point them at each other :)

You must have Line of Sight ... literally (and then some to cover the freznel zone).

If you can't see the other side (trees, buildings, etc) then you can't do the wireless link.

microwave tower maybe LOL

either that or you'll have to buy about 10 of the linksys repeaters and build a hut to put one in about every 50 yards

Under Normal circumstances Entry Level Wireless was not meant to cover distances longer then few hundreds feet outdoor.

However few people as a special project did mange to bridge distances as long as 5 miles.

Depending on the actual distance you might need to compensate for the curvature of our Planet, and or differences in heights between the two places. So you would need to build a tall Tower in each location and install highly directional Antennae.

You will have to use some sort of geodesic/survey tool to measure the height and Azimuth, and make sure that you are really pointing one Antenna to the other.

When the Antenna is away from the Transmitter (Access Point) Length of 2.4GHz coax cable that has to be used cause very fast RF deterioration. As a result long coax is not used in such installations. The APs are installed with the Antenna on the Antenna?s masts and run CAT5e down to your source.

All of this must be adequately protected from the Weather elements (you have tro buy special housing for the APs and a bunch of Arrestors), other wise one lighting storm and ??your are back to the Future??.

Assuming that you can execute such a project you would need to bridge the two sites

This link has info about Bridging options (not related to the distance).
