Wireless network help...

Right now I have two computers setup in a wired lan with a Netgear RT314 Router. I am getting laptop this week that has both wireless capability so that I can use it at school and at the library.

I'd also like to have wireless at home so I can use it in my room across the house from the other two computers. My brother likes to listen to music alot so it'll be hard to study sometimes. I don't need wireless for all the computers though. The two desktops most likely will not be moved so they really don't need it.

I guess my question is how would I setup the wireless capability for the laptop (router or some other thingamajiggy)? Or would it just be easier to setup a completely wireless lan for all? But I'd rather not deal with the hassle of wireless for all of them.

Any suggestions would be extremely helpful as I've not been keeping up with new technology lately (past year) and have no clue when it comes to wireless.

Thanks🙂

You could just replace your current router with a wireless one since they have 4 wired ports on them. Other then that there's not much to it, just follow the quick start guide (my Linksys router came with one) and you'll be up and running. It's been a couple of years since I set up my laptop for wireless but I don't remember it being very difficult. Windows XP is pretty simple for setting up a network (in my experience anyway).

Oh I forgot to ask...is there a certain brand that's more reliable than others for a wired/wireless config? My Netgear has been extremely reliable but I don't know their quality when it comes to wireless.

I have a microsoft 802.11b router (with 4 ports) the wireless is so terrible (either that or my $9 wireless nic) that I gave up and bought a 50 ft cable. Wired is pretty reliable.

(it might have been the NIC, I had no problem with a netgear pcmcia nic)
