Wireless network drops while transferring large files

I've got a Linksys G router with a Linksys G desktop card. My wireless network works without fail while surfing the net and chatting but will ALWAYS drop the connection if I try to transfer large files (usually 50MB or larger). I've talked to Linksys tech support off and on for over a year and they can't ever offer any sound advice. I just recently upgraded from a wireless B router and B card which had the same problem.

We don't have any 2.4 GHz phones and there's only 1 other wireless network in the area.

I would greatly appreciate any help that anyone could give me on this subject. Post if you need me to clarify any details of my setup.

You might try searching the dslreports.com forums for info on that router. Some routers have known issues that the users know about but the company won't admit to....

Give us some model numbers! I'm guessing you have at least a WRT54G/S perhaps? What kind of wireless cards are you running? Do all of your wireless clients experience this same problem? Which firmware are you running on there? Are you using the Windows Zero Config utility or a Linksys one?

EDIT: Does this happen from wireless > wireless only or wireless > LAN or LAN > wireless?

I'll go check DSL reports as soon as I finish posting this info.

Router: WRT54G
Firmware Version: v3.03.6

Card: WMP54GS using windows Zero config util.

The only time I've experienced this problem is when I am transferring files to or from the wireless desktop with the WMP54GS card. The other computers are usually hardwired to the router when I am transferring files but are sometimes wireless. Either way, I get the same problem.

I used to have this same problem when I had my network setup with linksys B routers and B cards. Back then I tried the linksys wireless config utility and it didn't seem to help any.

Let me know if you guys need more info.

Which hardware version of the WRT54G do you have? It'll say on the bottom.

Check out this site and the forums. The above link is to a similar issue that you share with these guys. Be prepared for 27 pages of reading! You might have a defective unit! :Q

It's hardware v3.

I saw that thread and made it to about page 7 when I started to notice that most people were having problems with version 1 and some version 2 hardware.

This has been a headache that I've had to deal with for over a year and with two different setups. I'm thinking about turning in my nerd card and having those GeekGuys come setup my network. After browsing those forums, I think I can safely say it'll be a while before I purchase another cisco product. :(

I'd never look at Linksys and call it a Cisco-quality unit...if this one is giving you troubles, why not try a Netgear or D-Link? Take the WRT54G back to Wal-Mart (as they take back pretty much anything) and get a new unit. Not that I'd do this myself, but a friend of mine did...anyways, that's all based on your morals and is a whole other story.

Good luck man!

I've got nothing morally against sending back a defective product.

I'll see what I can do, thanks.
