My old Linksys wrt54g router stopped being able to get the ip from my cable modem, so i think i need a new router.

Anyone use wireless N routers? Are they really that much faster than wireless G? Obviously not for internet, but for LAN transfers and stuff.

yes and no.

they are faster when the band is clean (2.4 or 5-6ghz) but no faster when the airwaves are polluted.

and you best best best pick a router and client(pci/usb/etc) that match. otherwise you will get poopy draft-n compatibility.

mismatching chipsets brings poo results to wireless-N.

keep that in mind if you have a laptop or plan to get one.

atheros to atheros
broadcom to broadcom
etc. don't mix n match.

keep in mind routers can cost less than the actual pci/usb for multi-band/multi radio.

my newest laptop manages 450mbp/s second in a quiet basement but gets 29mbps in a busy living room (above ground).

yes 450 and 600 are possible now with N

depends what you use it for. If it is wireless just for Internet and checking emails then stick with G for now. If you need to do large file transfers which you cannot possibly use a wired connection or you are streaming video then take a good look at wireless N even in its draft form. I can sustain 8 to 10 MB (yes megabytes) per second with my wireless N network.
