Wireless N dongle's no longer working?

Up until recently I'd been using a TP-LinkTL-WN821N to reach my router downstairs, a few days ago it decided it wasn't working in my computer any more. When I plug it in to my USB I get the device disconnected sound and windows doesn't pick it up. It doesn't matter which hub I use, even my USB3 PCIE card. It does however work on the computer downstairs.

I do have a Belkin wireless g dongle and that works, but the performance is less than satisfactory.

I ordered a Linksys AE1200 Wireless N adapter which I'm returning tomorrow as it only worked for a short while with less performance than the Belkin. After that it behaves the same way as the TP-Link.

I can't connect to the router with wires, it's too far away, and for some reason if I move the router upstars, Internet performance eventually degrades and I have to phone the ISP (SKY).

Also a few months back one of the network ports blew in a lightning storm, I thought for a while that the other one still worked but when I tested it the other day it was also very slow. Everything else seems to be running fine.
