Wireless N AP Recommendations - DIR-655 act as AP?

I have an Ethernet drop, where I can put up a Access Point. I was hoping to clear up my 2.4GHZ network, and set up a 5GHZ N with it, any recommendations? I have a DIR - 655 that works great...40-50$ would be great too.

Bonus points if it has a 4 port 10/100/1000 switch in it.

EDIT :

Seems like the cheapest way would be for me to take a second DIR-655 and just turn it into AP mode? If I plug it into the LAN (from my DHCPing DIR-655) VIA WAN, and make the second DIR 655 into AP mode, will it work like a champ? Produce a 2.4ghz N connection?

Can anyone clarify my second DIR-655 configuration?

I'll probably run net stumbler when I get home, see what sort of channels are open.

I'm pretty sure the DIR-655 is only 2.4 so in order to move up to 5Ghz you'll have to move to a main router with 5ghz support and then make sure all your endpoints support it also.

If you want to extend the 2.4 N I would take a look at these Asus routers. They support DD-WRT so they can be setup in AP mode fairly easily.

RT-N10
RT-N12
RT-N13U

Most if not all three can be had for less than $50 after rebate. Slickdeals had an older post on the RT-N13U for $24 AR. You may have to wait a bit but you can find decent prices on these.

Edit: none of the routers above have a gig switch. You need to move to the RT-N15 or N16 to get that feature.

But what if I go for my second option?

I don't want to extend the network anymore, i'll actually be creating it's own SSID/network, just for my media extender...which will be 10 feet away from the access point. 2.4GHZ is fine, I think channel 7-8 are pretty clear in my complex.

I suggested those other routers because I was under the impression that they would be less expensive than adding another DIR-655. Does the DIR-655 firmware allow or provide an AP only mode? If so you should be fine. I've had good luck with the DD-WRT "bridge mode" to get a wired connection via wireless signal to some of my devices. I suggested the DD-WRT compatible devices because I know you can run them in AP or bridged mode. What type of media are you planning on streaming?

If you have an ethernet drop there already why don't you just run a cable to your device? Is there anything stopping you from running a cable the extra 10 feet to your device?

I have 3 other linksys wrt-54g's running in bridge right now, works great..channel 1. I just want something dedicated to media center 🙂...and adding a 4 port GB switch would be very handy where it's going.

I do not want to run a cable because it would have to go across a hallway..I can't go over ,or under, wireless is the only option the SO will approve of, haha.

I don't believe the DIR-655 has any AP role, but can be used as an additional router internally without issues. I use it this way, and have no access or translation issues.
