Wireless mouse voodoo

I've got a gyration mouse + keyboard. 30 ft range, optical, compact keyboard, gyroscope, overall pretty nice.

Occassionally the mouse will track (on the desk) in 1 direction fine, but really jerky in the other direction. The scroll wheel is almost completely unusable its so erratic. However the little transmitting light on the mouse always lights up and the little receiving light on the base always lights up.

The mouse poll rate flips between 60hz & 120hz(as judged by an app called mouserate.exe). Unfortunately this renders the mouse unusable for gaming, even parlor games where speed is any factor.

It's using the standard HID compliant mouse drivers that came with XP, has good batterries, tried different radio frequencies(gets good range around my PC), reinstalled the drivers - all to no avail.

Any ideas?
