wireless monitors (and printers, and scanners, etc)

why can't stationary components be wireless as well as mobile ones? is it cost prohibitive, or is there just not enough bandwidth to go around? i personally would love to have everything on my desk be wireless: i think i have an average amount of devices (monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner, card reader, nomad docking station, speakers) and i realize that a few of those could be made wireless, but if everything could be... ah, how sweet. plus, think of never having to deal with loose plugs, knotted or short cables... it would just make life that much easier.
so what are the bandwidth requirements of those devices? could everything just be bluetooth?

Not sure if this is HT (maybe perhipherals?). MS recently announced a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, a good start on what your looking for. I think as the prices continue to drop, you'll see more and more of this.

I think its just not practical to make a 3 feet wireless connection. Sure, the keyboard and mouse is wireless, but they use up extremely small bandwidths (few kilohertz) as supposed to a monitor, which video signals need around 300Mhz bandwidth. You might see a wireless scanner, printer, etc etc, but your not going to see a wireless monitor anytime soon because of the practicality of implementing such a system. First off, the analog signals would get noise interference as its being transmitted unless the signals get digitized, transmitted, and de-digitized.

Why not a wireless flatscreen then?

I think the main factor would be cost. For the average user, they plug their monitor in and they might unplug it once every year or so at most.

There is not much point. Plus, you have to keep a monitor hooked up to mains so its just one more thing to plug in.

actually, they're making wireless lcds already... well, not really.
here
the only thing holding me back from getting a wireless keyboard is that i have a kineses ergo classic contoured keyboard that's incredibly comfortable, but if they ever make a wireless ergo (split) keyboard then i'll swap my current kb/mouse for wireless and get some wireless speakers. i understand the bandwidth required for a wireless monitor, but an equal concern would be power if it were truly wireless. i think the tether is going to be cut eventually, it's just a matter of time.

On second thought, it'd be nice if I could put my noisy computer in the closet, close the door, and have a lcd/keyboard/mouse wireless right next to my bed. :)

<< You still need power cables for the scanner, monitor, printer... >>

You could always implement Benjimin Franklin's idea on DC power that would be transmitted though the air. Not sure if you could transmit the power required tho.

Actualy, some of the Seniors in my college just designed a wireless monitor for their design project. They inteneded it for wireless billboard design, though. It was about a 30in. screen, still powwered from the mains, but transmiting wirelessly. I was unable to ask them the protocall though.

Also, if some company did do this, wouldnt they need to "buy" that part of the spectrum from the FCC? ie. make sure they transmissions dont cause inteference with Radio Stations and Cell phones and that you dont get ghosting on yur screen from the microwave and whatever. As i understand, large chunks of the radio spectrum are now fairly expensive.
