I live in the boonies. I only have dial-up for now, unless I go with satellite. I was wondering what all is involved in going wireless in the house. Is it even possible? What do I need? Price?

Thanks!

Yes, it is possible. There are a few solutions. There are a limited number of dialup routers, but that's usually not the best way to go. Your best bet is to probably leave one computer on all the time, acting as a WAP. Then you can set up ICS through wireless, giving you wireless dialup. But, once again, it's still dialup.

I did a quick search, this came up:
http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/wirelessandmobiletips/story/0,24330,3404479,00.html

From the article:
Best solution? Put a Wi-Fi card in your computer, then connect to a desktop system in your house running Internet connection sharing. (You'll also need a Wi-Fi card in the desktop system.) Or take the PC that uses the modem and dialup connection and add to it a wireless access point and Internet connection sharing.

If you have the bucks, you can get a Wi-Fi base station with a built-in modem, such as the Apple AirPort. It has a built-in modem right alongside the Ethernet port.

That *should* give you an idea of what's involved. Not sure if the AirPort supports windows, but that might be a better solution if you don't want two computers at once. I have broadband though, so I haven't set this up myself. It seems relatively straightforward though.

I don't know the exact details of his setup, but my network admin has a wireless router at his house with a 56K serial modem attached to it. I believe it automatically initiates a call to connect when he attempts to connect to his dial-up.

Probably your best bet is a wireless ADSL/Cable router, with a RS232 port for "backup", which will have a modem attached to it.

Of course, while you have no cable/adsl, it will default to the "backup" all the time. That also means when you do get cable/adsl, you don't have to change that bit of equipment :)
