Wireless laptop question...

I've been thinking about buying a laptop. I was just wondering how wireless works... What would I need to buy and do you have to pay when you're somewhere in public and you get a wireless signal.
 
It depends on who is providing the wireless service. If it's a coffee shop (ie Starbucks), more than likely yes. If it's someone's private wireless network, then no, if they don't have WEP or mac filtering turned on 😉. The only equipment you would need in your home, would be a wireless router to connect to a broadband connection.
 
there are two types of wireless service.

access points
these can be set up at home, or you can pay to use various "hot spots" at coffee bars and airports.
the service is 20 bucks a month i think through tmobile.

through your cellular provider. I think those are billed per Kilobyte.

which one are you talking about?
 
Just a note from personal experience - don't get overhyped on built in wireless on a laptop. You're better off just buying a wireless pc card and using up a pc card slot.

Many built in wireless cards use the microsoft wireless network utility which is crappy at best. Built in wireless adapters also have poorer reception than an aftermarket adapter as well.

This is working with multiple laptops with built in wireless.
