I'm building a new computer and i would like to move it into my bedroom wich is on the second floor. My cable modem/router is on first floor and on the other side of the house. I Want to keep one computer downstairs next to the cable modem and router. Is there a way have to one computer upstairs running wireless that still allow me to play online games and such? I don't know much about wireless lan yet. Thanks for the advice in advance.

You can use wireless for that... just wireless that's farther away from the base station might not be the best connection. I dont know how far away it is, but it might be acceptable, it might not.

I had very bad luck trying to go between floors with wireless in a 2 story house.

I've always had good luck with Linksys equipment, but I was sorely disappointed and frustrated by wireless (I have a Linksys cable modem, and I have an 8 port Linksys router). I purchased a 4 port wireless-G router (Linksys WRT54G) and their corresponding Linksys adapters (WMP54G PCI card and WPC54G Notebook adapter). I couldn't get the signal to cross more than one room on the second floor (about 20 feet). I never was able to get even a faint signal on the other floor of the house.

My question to the forum: is my experience typical of other users? I've been working in IT for 20 years, and I can't imagine a novice computer user trying to make wireless work.

It seems to me that the only application for wireless is for those people too anal to have a cable running across the floor, since it will only reach ajoining rooms anyway. Any further than that... it's totally useless. Anybody had better luck with other equipment? Please let me know...

Oh and the $250 in Linksys wireless equipment, I returned to the store.

My experience:

I Live in a duplex, (One big house, seperated with a 6inch cement firewall in the middle, making two dwellings)

My neighbor can get dsl, but i can't (the phone jacks on the side of the house are like 6" apart) stupid phone comapny, so i wanted high-speed and running a network cable was out because of the wall.

Got two Linksys WAP11's version 2.2, put them in bridge mode (swithc at each side) and set Wep to 256bit, yeah i know, not secure, blah blah blah

Got a good signal, no problems whatsoever. 11mbit is was more than enough for DSL speelds.

Total distance would be about 50feet, but that's no line of sight, going from my neighbors bedroom to my living room 1 interrior wall and 1 shared wall (1inch drywall, 6inch cement, 1 inch drywall).

Advice, if it's for gamming, stay away from A and G. 802.11b gets better distance (but slower).
