Hey all,
I'm currently looking at setting up a wireless LAN in my home. I'm going to be moving back home from college soon, and really don't want to lose my constant internet connection:p! We have DSL at home, but there is no way for me to connect to it from my bedroom. So, for Christmas I'm asking for a wireless network. The way I see it, I have two options:

A) Put an AP/router in the office by the computer with the internet connection (hook it up through the DSL modem, assuming that this is how it's done) and the run the desktops (at least 2, I may get another before then however) in my room off of Wireless PC cards, and I'd also get a wireless PCM card for my iPaq.

-OR-

B) Put one AP/router in the office and another one in my bedroom, and use a wired connection my desktops. Also buy a PCM card for my iPaq/laptop (whenever I finally get it).

I'm not sure of the exact distance from the computer with the DSL modem to my bedroom, but the signal would be travelling through appx. 4 walls to get there. I wouldn't say any more than 50-75 feet, but I'll repost with that info later. If anyone can help me determine which method to use, I would appreciate it!

Thanks!

Well, you wouldn't use a second router. You could however get an additional AP and use it as a Workgroup Bridge, "Client mode" in most SOHO AP's. That would allow you wired connectivity to your desktops and still allow wireless associations from mobile nodes, iPaq/Laptop. I'd suggest looking at your first option and seriously consider getting Orinoco products. 4 walls and 75 feet may be a bit much to ask from most budget wireless equipment. Depends alot on the makeup of the walls and any other multipath interference you might encounter. Only way to know for sure is to test. Your second option may save you a few bucks since you could buy wired NIC's for your stationary PC's.
