Wireless LAN and ping?

Hi there!

Is it anyone here that can tell me if a hardcore gamer will experience any difference between Wireless LAN and "cable-LAN"?
Ok, I can imagine that a slightly difference should appear in form of, higher ping or maybe some packet-loss or similar - but will I notice any difference? How big difference can it be (percent or in ms-ping)?
More LAG? Will I LAG more for other ppl?

What kind of standard is the best? IEEE 802.11x?

Does anyone here have any recommendations in preferred hardware?

I don't think there is much delay on any sort of wireless Ethernet. It probably wouldn't me noticable as long as you had a clear connection to the WAP. The best standard to use right now is probably 802.11g since it's backwards compatible with "b" and provides the speeds of "a" (54 mbps) all on the 2.4 GHz frequency.

Very debateable as to using .11g would be your best bet. Pretty buggy pre-standard software. Some have great success. Others are struggling. If reliability is a concern you might want to consider staying with the tried and true 802.11b. Except for a fringe community like OOL that have faster than 3 mb broadband connections, the internet connection would be the bottleneck anwyay.

As to the original question. Assuming your link quality is good, high signal to noise ratio, and no multipath or other interference, your wireless pings won't be any higher than wired ones. Perhaps 1-3 ms extra.

I have an 802.11b LAN set up at home. We've had LAN games with 3 computers hooked up (1 wired, 2 wireless) and there hasn't been any problems with lag.
