Wireless LAN? Advice

Hey; My university provides IBM T40 notebooks to every student and I was thinking it might be a good idea for us to chip in and get a wireless router. The T40 comes standard with wireless internet (definitely 802.11b; not sure about a; definitely not g). Would setting up a wireless access point be a good idea? We'd need something that everyone in the hall can access (20 yards) and that doesn't cost much. Our campus has a wireless network but it doesn't reach the dorms so it would be convenient if we didn't have to stretch LAN cables across all of our rooms. I assume that Linksys or Dlink or someone makes a cheap one that would suit our needs. Can someone recommend a model and a place to buy it (I usually use newegg)?

D-Link DI-614+ can be had for as low as $35 shipped online...one of the best names in networking. it functions on a 2.4GHz frequency, but they also have more expensice ones that operate on 5.4GHz. i set one up at my friends' house. they have 5 computers, lots of walls, and most of the time their signal strenth is excellent. 4 of the computers each use the D-Link DWL-120+ wireless USB adapter to receive the signal. search for these items on pricewatch.com to find the cheapest prices. some places like newegg might have MIRs...
