I am setting up one of my older machines as my Divx movie and MP3 player in my home entertainment room. To make this work I was thinking that a good RF wireless keyboard & mouse would provide the necessary interface, allowing some occasional web browsing and the ability to power on the computer and play music / movies. The unit should work from a distance of approximately 15 - 20 feet and be able to receive the signal through the cabinet door of my entertainment unit.

Can anyone recommend a suitable device that would work (hopefully someone who has tried this before).

Thanks for any advice you can offer

i have the logitech iTouch wireless keyboard and the logitech optical cordless mouseman. they're good. i don't know if they work 15ft though. i haven't tested that. they're good though. i'm probably going to get rid of them cuz i hate having to change batteries. i hear the microsoft wireless intellimouse is really good though. i might have to look into that one. i reccommend Logitech stuff. they're good. also, intel has some wireless stuff that's supposed to be good.

I second the Logitech Cordless Freedom Optical. I have had mine for about 3 weeks and love it. I haven't tested it up to 15-20 feet, but it works flawlessly from about 10'.

Logitech all the way here bud :)

Used mine up to about 20 feet with no problems, I guess it is almost like line of sight concerning the distance and things inbetween which may disrupt the IR

I've been looking for something like this too and came across this globlink iFree combo (sold at newegg).. there's a review of it at overclocker's club here

newegg link

There's a wireless mouse/kb combo, and another keyboard that has a trackball built in (which is the one that overclocker's club reviews)..

Hope to try it out soon.. good luck

EDIT: btw, the description at Newegg says the effective range is 6 feet, but the guy at overclocker's club got it to work at about 17-18 feet..

I'd advise going with the Logitech Wireless Freedom or Optical Freedom. Ive used them from atleast 15ft away in my g/f basement to control her computer and it works great except its real hard to read small text on a 17in moniter from 15ft away ;) Maybe I need glasses. Anyways, I'd recommend the Optical Freedom over the wireless because the mouse is optical and will work on any surface where the Wireless Freedom has a ball mouse and is a little more picky over what surface you rub it on.

Ok...that sounded sick but whatever ;)

I just got a Logitech Cordless Optical Freedom kbd/mouse set. I think it's great. It's certainly an improvement over my KeyTronic keyboard and MS Wireless Intellimouse Explorer.

Another vote here for the Logitech Cordless Freedom Optical. I have owned all of the cordless desktops since the original. This one is by far the best!!
