I have replaced my Linksys WRT54G with the latest hardware revision and updated to the latest firmware. I have tried several PCMCIA cards including a Linksys 54G card and a Netgear 802.11b card. When I'm browsing the Internet or sending instant messages, the notification bubble will appear telling me that I am "now connected to ___"; the wireless network to which I was already connected to! This will temporarily disconnect me from the IM service or cause web pages to time-out.
It does this even when I'm sitting right next to the wireless router.
I understand that there could be interference from other electronics in the home. Is there a utility that will listen to different channels and try to find the one with least interference? I've already tried setting my router to a low channel (1), high channel (11), and in-between channel (6); all with the same results.
My sister says that her laptop (using Intel Cetrino wireless) does the same thing. What the hell is going on?
I forgot to mention that I'm using Windows XP with SP2 applied, but this problem was around before SP2.
I've also reinstalled XP Pro with SP2 integrated onto the installation disc. I'm pretty sure that software is not the problem.
