Wireless issues...someone's on my network, how can I talk to them/"hack" them?

So I'm running a wireless network so that my computer in the basement can have connectivity w/o running hundreds of feet of wire. Being in a small suburban neighborhood, I didn't think I'd have to worry about anybody other than a guy in his car jacking my wireless network. I know that on the network he's x.x.x.26, but other than that, nothing. I'm not familiar with net send through the command prompt, so can someone tell me how to msg everyone on the network with a msg?

Other than that, is there any way I can get ahold of his system or what are basic vulnerabilities? Thanks.

scan the IP, find the open services, exploit those services.

In the mean time do the basics to "secure" your wireless net.

1) disable ssid broadcast
2) enable wep
3) use mac address filtering

Heh so instead of asking how to secure your wlan you ask how to "hack" him......sometimes I just never understand people.

Well this has to be one of my neighbors, so I just want to tell him to bug off...I know I can do MAC-filtering, but I figure that I might as well learn something new in the process. :) I just want to figure out how to handle this guy.

I guess I'll just see how it all plays out...I reset the router, and he hasn't logged back on yet, so we'll see. Thanks again.

When few people are on Wireless systems in close neighborhoods (depending on the settings), Wireless Clients can detect and log On by themselves to another Network.

Sometime the neighbor?s network can yield stronger connection and a person would not even know that his Wireless decided to use the other person?s Internet connection.

That does not mean that any body is doing any thing worng, it is possible that the other person does not even know that his Wireless appears else where.

So secure your network first, calm down and see what happens in the next few days.

type
net send [ip] [message]

example

net send x.x.x26 stop stealing my wireless, a-hole.

as for getting ahold of his system-- check your network places and see if he is sharing any files or folders.

sounds like a clearer message than the net send one

Sorry, if someone got on my wireless somehow it would be like, "GAME ON!" I probably wouldn't do anything damaging - heck he might have connected by newbie accident thinking he was on his own wireless next door...I'd sure see if I could find some .jpg's of the Mrs. though :)

Well, apart from securing the router, I've put him in the DMZ, and then restricted all of his ports so he can't actually do anything, except for a small window Monday 4AM-5AM. :) Other than that, I have NetStumbler installed on my dad's laptop, and orinoco card in that seems to be pretty strong, and detect anything other than me, so I don't think there's another wireless network around my house, he just probably has a laptop or something (why would you buy a wireless PCI or USB adapter if you didn't have the router...).

He hasn't used the router since late afternoon yesterday, so hopefully he figured out something. Guess we'll see. :)

If someone broke into your wireless network (and you have at least some idea of how to secure it), chances are he's not stupid enough to leave obvious gaping holes in his system, and unless you are some kind of elite hacker person, I doubt you'll be able to break into his system. Just a thought :)

Possibly. anyway, just let this die, he hasn't tried using it again, and I'll figure something out for the future. maybe I'll break down and secure it. :)

With no NAT to hide behind it is very likely I could cause some trouble. It would depend on quite a number of variables but being on the LAN with the guy means 90% of the exploits out there are going to be applicable. I'm not particularly malicious so the first thing I would do is sort out if he got there by accident or on purpose. That would determine his fate.

I just finished installing a wireless setup over at a friend's house today. One of her neighbors evidently has a router and had left it wide open. I was shocked to see that I had my choice of networks to connect to. I almost told her to take the router back and just use the other connection. *Sigh*, morals really get in the way sometimes.

LOL yeah we wouldn't be having this problem if he would just have secured his WiFi in the first place. I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out he has dhcp on and its the computer he is typing on now lol.

EvilYoda, it's possible that your neighbor is a computer newbie who is "using" your wireless network without even realizing it. He might have just bought a new laptop with built-in Wi-Fi but doesn't use it. When you got your wireless router going, the laptop just automatically got that IP address from its DHCP server. He might not have any idea that this is going on.

I'd try sending him a "net send xxx.xxx.xxx.26 I know you're using my wireless router. Stop now or I will report you to the police" message at the command prompt. If he's doing in on purpose, that should scare him enough to make him stop.
