Wireless issue

Hey I siged up for sympatico high speed and it came with a built in wireless router (speedstreem 6520. Now i have my wireless network hooked up throught the speedstream config utility running 128 bit open wep security. When trying to connect to my laptop it just continuously says "validating identity" It seems sometimes when this happens I can still browse the net, however randomly I cant or it drops the connection. Also, it only seems to work if i set the adapter to 802.11b only. Oddly enough i connected my gf's mac effortlessly. Does anyone have any ideas? This is confusing me as my laptop is win xp. (same as host comp) I am updating drivers now in hopes of a fix. Any help would be appreciated/

Thanks

OK good news is downloaded driver and got connected. Seems the dumb microsoft connection utility sucks. The broadcom one worked without a hitch. However, now I seem to have bad througput. Its a 802.11g adapter(well b and g) and when i connect it initially connects at 54 mps. As time goes on though it slowly drops....as in now im sitting at connected at 24 mbps....I dont understand it. My throughput is horrible with a dsl report of 47 kbps up and 46 down....5.9Kb sec transfer rate? I have 3 mb dsl. Any ideas?

WELL I uninstalled the broadcom driver, reinstalled and configured and it is now working as it should. Thanks for the help guys 😉
