My small local wireless ISP had weather related problems the other day. When they came back online Firefox worked fine but Thunderbird failed to work. I've changed nothing with either application. The ISP tech support was less than helpful.

Can someone help me help them? What could cause my email client to stop working while my browser and ping still work fine? What can I ask them to check?

when we had that problem it was because the new email server we got required the domain name after the user name and nobody had been using it up to that point

our admin spent a solid week on the phone explaining it to people :)

is the mail server the ISP's, or someone elses?

can you ping the mail server by name?

@xSAuronx
I don't know if they replaced any servers. Lightening struck their transmission tower. I can ask.

@nweaver
I can ping their mail server: mail.xxx.net. I do not know who owns it. Their website address is www.xxx.net. The xxx is the same for both.

OK, I reverted back to the default server settings eliminating AVG. I can download and send mail now. So having Thunderbird configured to check incoming mail for viri with AVG was the problem. That's strange because I've been using AVG and these settings for a couple of years with no problem.

Could my ISP have changed something that affected my AVG settings??

no, as that is client side. I would guess either an issue with an update to either AVG or Thunderbird, or a fluke thing that got changed by malware or accident.
