Wireless is connected, web browsers won't work.

Hey gang,

Some of you may have seen another thread of mine regarding my g/f's laptop. All of a sudden, her web browser (Firefox) would only pop up "Server Not Found" pages, and couldn't actually get online. However, her wireless signal was strong, she was connected to an open network, and other computers were connected to the same WiFi with no issues. All of her settings seemed OK, but obviously something wasn't right! You can find that thread here: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=32&threadid=1985268&enterthread=y

Ok, fast forward to today...not only have I not fixed HER machine yet, but I open up my laptop at work today, and apparently MY machine now has the same problem!!! ARRRRGH!!! It was working just fine last night, I made no changes, and I installed nothing. I bring it to work every day, fire it up, and I'm online. All of a sudden, it's doing the same thing as my g/f's machine. I can't get online.

I don't know much (anything) about networks, so I'm kind of at your mercy here. I did open up a DOS prompt and ran ipconfig /all on my machine, but I'm not too sure what to look for and I don't have time to type it all out right now (I'm posting this from another machine).

TCP/IP settings are "automatic" as they should be, I'm using a Belkin 802.11g PCMCIA network adapter. It's just so strange that everything was working just fine last night, and all of a sudden it can't get online today. Any ideas? Please let me know! Thanks so much!

Are you getting the correct ip? I had a problem where I was trying to connect to my switch or router, and somehow my computer assigned itself it's own ip of the 192.168 variety (not router assigned). I had to end up connecting directly to the port on my wall, denying my other computers access. I was just about to post about it to see if anybody knew anything, but somehow it fixed itself. My suggestion would be to try connecting directly through whatever you get your connection from. I haven't had any networking classes since high school, so I've forgotten almost everything that could've helped me, but mabey this craziness will work for you.

Can you ping the router? Can you ping the next hop? First step is to find out where your connection is stopping.
